And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the Ministry of Reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the Word of Reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

MOR-Bible, which is by God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, grace, God's unmerited divine favor, be to you. And peace and absolute end of all strife or trouble be to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ to the faithful in Christ Jesus.

Father, we thank you for opening our understanding of your Word on how to walk in fellowship with you and your son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Father, we thank you for instructing us in your Word and for the wondrous and marvelous truth we will learn. In the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.

This month's teaching is on the Greek word stoicheó which is translated to our English word "walk." We will:

  • Search, investigate, and examine all five scripture usages of the Greek word stoicheó.
  • Define the number five's (5) meaning in God's Word.

Note: The sources for all Greek English words are Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, The Critical Lexicon and Concordance to the English and Greek Word of God (Bullinger), Young's Analytical Concordance to the Bible, The Word Study Concordance by George V. Wigram and Ralph D. Winter, The Bible Hub, Topical Lexicon, and Webster's Desk Dictionary of the English Language.

    Note: Bold added for highlighting.

According to the Bible, we, as children of God, must walk imitating our Father (see Ephesians 5:1) and His son, the Lord Jesus Christ (see 1 Corinthians 2:16). We are to walk in the spirit (see Galatians 5:16) holding forth the word of life (see Philippians 2:16). We are NOT to walk in the flesh by sense knowledge (Romans 8:1). Our walk determines our fellowship with God our Father and His son the Lord Jesus Christ and other believers walking in the household. We are all in Christ which is the new birth (see Romans 10:9). Our walk is a walk in the Lord worthy of the vocation wherewith we are called (see Ephesians 4:1).

Why do we do these teachings? Why do we look at the original meaning of words used in the Bible? Because the will of God is the Word of God. There is no other way to know God's Will without knowing His Word rightly divided. As it is written in 2 Timothy 2:15:

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

We study to show thyself approved unto who? God! We are to be a workman that needed not to be what? Ashamed. We are to rightly dividing the word of what? truth.

Let us read 2 Timothy 2:15 with understanding:

Make haste to study with diligence, earnestness, and zeal, to show thyself tested unto God, the one supreme with whom is the fountain of life and light, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth which is the Will of God.

Let us search, investigate and examine very carefully the five usages of the Greek word stoicheó which is translated to our English word "walk." Remember, we do this so that we can rightly divide the word of truth for meaning and understanding.

The Greek word stoicheó means to stand or go in order, advance in rows or ranks; to walk orderly, walk according to any rule or order. This reminds me of my time in the Army when we were taught to walk in rank and file. As a born-again believer, stoicheó tells us that our walk in God's Word is to be orderly according to what is taught in the Bible. We are to walk according to God's Word following the instruction provided.

The number five (5) in God's Word represents grace which is the Greek word charis which means God's unmerited divine favor. What does God's favor mean, as favor can mean many different things? For example, to the miserable, favor can be mercy. To the poor, favor can mean pity. To the suffering, favor can be compassion. To the obstinate, favor can mean patience. However, favor shown to the unworthy is called grace. In the Bible, grace is truly divine in terms of its source and in its character.

The first usage of stoicheó is documented in Acts 21:24. Before we get into the first usage of the word stoicheó or walk, let's get some context. In this usage, the apostle Paul wanted to go to Jerusalem, but the Will of God was for Paul not to go to Jerusalem. Paul did not walk by the Will of God's Word, as he chose to go to Jerusalem against God's Will. Imagine that! Even the apostles made mistakes! As it is written in Acts 21:4:

And finding disciples, we [Luke and Paul and other companions] tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit [the gift of holy spirit], that he should not go up to Jerusalem.

Acts 21:10-12:

And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus.

And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle [belt], and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost [God via revelation], So shall the Jews [Judeans] at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle [belt] and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

And when we heard these things, both we [Luke and Paul's other companions], and they of that place, besought
[implored] him [Paul] not to go up to Jerusalem.

So, in the first usage of stoicheó or walk, Paul did not walk according to the Will of God's Word. Let's look at 21:21 for more context.

And they are informed of thee [Paul], that thou teachest all the Jews [Judeans] which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs.

Now, the first usage in verse 24:

Them take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things, whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest [stoicheó or walk] orderly, and keepest the law.

Let us investigate and examine some of the Greek words used in the first usage of the Greek word stoicheó.

  • The word take is the Greek word paralambanó which means to take, to receive, to take along, to accept.
  • The phrase purify thyself is the Greek word hagnizó meaning to purify, to cleanse, to sanctify.
  • The phrase be at charges is the Greek word dapanaó which translates to spend, expend, consume.
  • The word shave is the Greek word xurao or an outward, visible statement of consecration and purification.
  • The phrase may know is the Greek word ginóskó which means to know, to come to know, to recognize, to perceive or to know by experience.
  • The phrase were informed is the Greek word katécheó meaning to instruct, to teach, to inform.
  • The phrase walkest orderly is the Greek word stoicheó which is the focus of our study this month. It means to stand or go in order, advance in rows or ranks; to walk orderly, walk according to any rule or order.
  • The word keepest is the Greek word phulassó which means to guard, to keep, to watch over, to protect, to observe.
  • The word law refers to the Old testament law.

Now, with this richer understanding of the words and phrases used in this verse, let's re-read Acts 21:24:

Them [the four men], take along, and make yourself Paul pure and clean with them, and shave their heads for outward, visible consecration and purification, and all may know by experience, that those things, whereof they were instructed concerning you, Paul [reference to verse 21], are nothing; but in contrast, that thou thyself live according to and observe the Old testament Law.

So, in the first usage of the word stoicheó or walk, they, the elders, wanted Paul to visually demonstrate the keeping of the Law of Moses even though he was born-again of God's Spirit. They wanted Paul to walk according to the Law not according to the Grace Administration in which Paul and we now live! Remember, the Word of the Lord was for Paul not to go to Jerusalem (see Acts 21:4). As it is written in Romans 10:4:

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth.

Today, we are still confronting those people who want to keep us under the Law of Moses. As born-again believers who walk in the Word of God, we know (ginóskó) we are in the Grace Administration. We know that Christ is the head of the body the church (see Colossians 1:18)! And we, the body, follow our head! We stoicheó or walk according to the Word of God.

The second usage of stoicheó is documented in Romans, one of the seven Church Epistles (i.e., Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Thessalonians) which is addressed to the Grace Administration in which we now live.

Romans is the first doctrine epistle listed in the seven Church Epistles. It contains the groundwork, the foundation, the beginning point, for the all truth (see John 16:13) knowledge which Jesus Christ said he would send after his ascension (see Acts 1:9). Romans teaches us about humankind due to the unredeemed state of Adam who fell from God's Grace into ungodliness and unrighteousness. The foundation is laid for the Grace Administration in Chapters 1-9 of Romans. After these nine chapters of doctrine in Romans, we are taught how to be born-again of God's Spirit without the Law (see Romans 10:9-10).

The second usage of stoicheó appears is It is written in Romans 4:12 and regards Abraham, who is the father of all who believed God's Word. We will read verses 10-11 for context.

How was it then reckoned [set to his account]? when he [Abraham] was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith [believing] which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed [set to his account] unto them also.

Verse 12:

And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk [stoicheó] in the steps of that faith [believing] of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

The word circumcision here is a prophetic call to inward transformation. Romans 2:28-29 tells us:

A man is not a Judean because he is one outwardly, nor is circumcision only outward and physical.

No, a man is a Judean because he is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter.

In Romans 4:12 above, Abraham was justified while still being uncircumcised. The sign never conferred righteousness; it signified a righteousness obtained by believing.

Given our understanding of stoicheó, let's re-read Romans 4:12 with understanding:

And Abraham, the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but in contrast, who walk also in the footsteps of that believing of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

The third usage is documented in Galatians 5:25. Galatians was written to correct doctrinal errors for not adhering to the book of Romans. We will read Galatians 5:24 for context.

And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk [stoicheó] in the Spirit.

Let's re-read Galatians 5:25 with understanding:

If we live life in the new birth of the gift of holy spirit, let us walk (stoicheó) according to the manifestation of the gift of holy spirit.

The fourth usage is documented in Galatians 6:16. We will read verse 15 for context.

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature [creation].

And as many as walk [stoicheó] according to this rule [see verse 15], peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

I taught you previously that the number four (4) is the world number. See December 2020 teaching. As the fourth usage of stoicheó, let us investigate and examine very carefully some key words in this verse for better understanding.

  • The phrase as many as is the Greek word hosos which means as many as, as much as, all that, whoever, whatever. When we add the phrase shall walk or stoicheó, we understand this to mean "all that walk."
  • The word rule is the Greek word kanón meaning a rule, standard, or principle.
  • The word peace is the Greek word eiréné means an absolute end of all strife or trouble. You will see that I reference this in the prayers at the beginning and end of the teachings.
  • The word mercy is the Greek word eleos which means mercy, compassion, pity, or the withholding of deserving judgement.
  • The phrase Israel of God means the wrestler with God.
  • The word God is Theos which means the one supreme whom is the fountain of life and light. You will see that I reference this in the prayers at the beginning and end of the teachings.

Now, let's take a deep breath as we take in all this rich understanding and re-read Galatians 6:16:

Whosoever walk or stoicheó according to this standard, for in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availed anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation, peace and absolute end of all strife or trouble, be on them and mercy, withholding of deserving judgement upon the Israel of God, the one supreme whom is the fountain of life and light.

The fifth usage stoicheó is documented in Philippians 3:16. Philippians is one of the seven Church Epistles. It was written to the Administration of Grace in which we now live. It corrects practical errors for not obeying the doctrine written in the Epistle of Ephesians. We will read verses 13-15 for context. Let's start with Philippians 3:13:

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.

In our walk to live according to our head, Christ, we are instructed to forget the past as Jesus Christ paid for it. When the devil brings the past up in your mind, quote the Word of God. Philippians 3:13 is a great verse to start with and end with! Don't let your past defeat you, declare it null and void, and move on. This is the Will of God!

Continuing with verses 14-15:

I press toward the mark [goal] for the prize of the high [upper] calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in anything ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

Verse 16:

Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk [stoicheó] by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

Let's increase our understand of this verse by unpacking the meaning of the words.

  • The word nevertheless is the Greek word plén which means nevertheless, but, except, or however.
  • The phrase have already attained is the Greek word phthanó meaning to come, to arrive, to attain, to precede.
  • The word rule is the same as Galatians 6:16. It is the Greek word kanón or a rule, standard, or principle and references verse 13.
  • The word mind is the Greek word phroneó means to think, to set one's mind on, to have a mindset.

Let's now re-read Philippians 3:16 with understanding:

But in contrast, whereto we have already attained, because God is in Christ (see 2 Corinthians 5:19) and it is Christ in you (see Colossians 1:27) let us walk or stoicheó according to the same standard, which is the Word of God, this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, pressing toward the goal for the prize of the upper calling of God in Christ Jesus, let us have a mindset on the same thing.

So, what have we learned about our walk in God's Word? The five usages we have reviewed tell us that we are to:

  • walkest [stoicheó] orderly, and keepest the law (Acts 21:24).
  • walk [stoicheó] in the steps of that faith [believing] of our father Abraham (Romans 4:12).
  • walk [stoicheó] in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25).
  • walk [stoicheó] according to this rule (Galatians 6:16).
  • walk [stoicheó] by the same rule (Philippians 3:16).

Our walk is to be an orderly one in keeping with God's Word. We are to walk as Jesus Christ did always doing the will of God his Father. We are told to walk in the spirit, forgetting the past and walking by the standards documented in God's Word. We are to walk with our minds set on God's rightly divided Word! No one can walk on God's Word or do His Will until they know what God's Word declares! This is why we do these teachings. This is why we rightly divide the Word and learn the rich meaning behind the original words used in the text. The Will of God is the Word of God! As it is written in Philippians 2:2 and 5:

Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.

Our walk, as children of God, must be in accordance with the scriptures and imitating our Father (see Ephesians 5:1) and His son the Lord Jesus Christ (see 1 Corinthians 2:16). The only way to manifest this walk of the love of God in the renewed mind in manifestation is by studying to rightly divide God's Word and taking believing action. When people observe our walk, they should see God's Word manifested with love. 1 Peter 1:25 tells us:

The word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

In this month's teaching, we searched, investigated, and examined the five usages of the Greek word stoicheó translated to our English word "walk." We defined the number five's (5) meaning in God's Word. As result, we learned that for in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availed anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.

We also learned we must walk or stoicheó by believing, by the gift of holy spirit, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before. We are to walk forward by pressing toward the prize of the upper calling of God in Christ Jesus. This is to be our walk, and our mind set.

Father, thank you for giving us the ability to walk (stoicheó) in fellowship with you and your son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Father, thank you for giving us your gift of holy spirit so that we can walk in the spirit. Thank you, that we can walk on the same Word of God that your only begotten son walked on and receive the results. Father, I pray our walk as your children is one after your own heart fulfilling all your Will and Word. We pray that our walk this holiday season be well pleasing and acceptable in the sight of God our Father. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.

We sure do love you. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men (Luke 2:14). Blessings for a wonderous Christmas and a joyous New Year.

In the Lord,

Ministry of Reconciliation
Son of God through Jesus Christ
Ambassador for Christ
